So what have you been up to?
Not posting much, clearly! I spent most of July on sabbatical and have been back a little over than a month. (No, I'm not an academic--I work for a tech company that has occasional ridiculous benefits.) I have successfully gone to church (glad I made it this week, as I was surprised and delighted to find myself sitting in the pew behind our previous associate priest and her boyfriend--now fiancee! She was one of my best friends at church before taking a tenure-track position in the middle of nowhere a good seven hours from here, and I haven't seen ( Read more... )

If you're calling your sister at one in the morning because it's urgent that someone pick up your girlfriend's car from the shop and deposit it at the Park and Ride sometime in the next four hours, you might want to reconsider phrases like "I need you to" in favour of "please, please, please would you help me out here, and also I love you". I was so productive this weekend. I did loads of reading, I exercised, I sent emails, I made good progress on the Big Bang fic and picked up Unlettered for the first time in ages, and I bought a mattress, which gives me all sorts of strange feelings about permanence and singlehood and financing but, more to the point, will hopefully do something ( Read more... )

It's not that I enjoy working fourteen-hour days. It's just that every so often our developers decide my job description includes mindreading,  and then I have to spend half my day trying to figure out why the code I'm testing isn't working the way I thought it would, and then the other half retesting everything because, as it turns out, their ( Read more... )

When reading or writing flashbacks, which tense do you prefer? If it's a good-sized scene, should it switch to past tense after establishing chronology via the past perfect, or should the whole thing be in past perfect, never mind the aesthetic  issue of hads all over the place?

I was really hoping to go to the Easter Vigil tonight, but I must still be running a sleep deficit. Suddenly I feel as though I've been stepped on, so I think I may spend the evening in bed.
